Domestic dog and puppy training classes are held on Tuesday nights at 7:30pm - 8:30pm in 6-week blocks. We have an indoor obedience training area for all weather training.

6-Week Domestic Courses

6-week block courses are held approximately every 2 months during the year. Please keep checking the website for course dates and when registrations open. Your dog or puppy will need to be fully vaccinated to attend the course. The course costs $120.

When we have received your payment, your spot on the course is secure. Shortly before the course begins you will be notified by email. If you have any serious concerns about your dog behaviour-wise, please notify us before the first night (manukauintake@gmail.com). We have an obligation to keep everyone who comes along to our club safe. You might need help from an experienced behaviouralist.

It can be a daunting time for your dog, coming to an unfamiliar environment full of other nervous dogs experiencing the same thing for the first time. Some dogs will seem withdrawn, some might bark. With gentle encouragement and treats dogs get over this initial feeling fairly quickly and learn to love their night out.

Your dog needs a comfortable well fitted collar and a lead around 1.2m long. You don't want a lead that is too short or too long. Consider how easy it is to hold onto the lead and that it won't hurt your hands if your dog pulls hard. Don't use an extendable lead, these are too difficult to manage during group training. Bring some tidbits for treats for your dog. These can be their favourite pre-made treats or something like frankfurter or cocktail sausages or superior chunky dog roll. Pre-cut the treats into a suitable tidbit-size pieces for your dog. Special treat bags designed for this purpose can be purchased from most pet stores, but a small bag in your pocket works well too! Wearing good shoes is important too, jandals and crocks have been found to be a tripping hazard.

Any questions you have specifically regarding your dog can be answered during the class. It is hard to do this over the phone or email without having met you and your dog. You'll be surprised how many of you will have the same questions!

Check out our map below to know positions of the car parks and the building. Please do not come too early to class, there are classes running beforehand that finish at 7:15pm. When these people have left there will be more room in the car park and fewer dogs in the building. The driveway running around the outside of the property is narrow and its difficult for cars to pass each other. If you put the address into google maps (or similar) it might take you to the next driveway down the road towards Clevedon, so as you are getting close, look out for the big sign on your left. It is a very wide driveway and the gate will be open!

Please always be mindful of covid courtesies, don't come to class if you are isolating or unwell. Mask wearing is optional, and we strongly advise sensible social distancing. Any changes to training due to national covid restrictions will be updated on this site, and on our FaceBook page.

Map showing location of the club grounds

Site map of the grounds. (Please note the position of the entrance to the grounds - this is a wide double-gated driveway with a large lit up sign. Sometimes a google maps location will take you to the caretakers residence, the next gate down the road, which will be locked at night.)

FAQ

Classes are held at 7:30pm on Tuesdays for an hour in 6-week blocks approximately every 2 months. Exact dates for course starts and registrations will be posted on the site. Training is held at the Ardmore Exhibition Centre, 743 Clevedon Road, Ardmore, Papakura.

Your dog with a well fitted collar and lead. Enough pre-cut treats for your dog to last the class. Sensible closed in footwear - there are uneven surfaces around the venue and during class you might be walking backwards; jandals and crocks are not safe!

Class starts at 7:30pm. Aim to arrive around 7:25pm so the previous class have left the building and carpark. Lower numbers in the building is easier on the dogs and sensible in our current COVID climate.

We are very lucky to be training in the indoor arena - so YES we do not postpone/cancel classes due to weather.

Family members are welcome to watch the class from the sidelines, but on training night we prefer only one person to be in the class per dog. It can become unmanageable and confusing if there are too many people. Certainly when you get your dog home you can teach the rest of your family what you have been learning so everyone can benefit from your new knowledge.

For more information on CGC please check out the link below to the DogsNZ website. This is where you can find the assessment forms when you need them.
